Individuals for the Arts presents our Annual Leadership Awards as a part of the 2022 Annual Convention. These awards acknowledge the achievements of people and organizations dedicated to enriching their communities by the humanities.
The 2022 Selina Roberts Ottum Award for Arts Management is introduced to Julie Garreau (Lakota title Wičhaȟpi Epatȟaŋ Wiŋ). Garreau is an enrolled member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, and is the chief director of the nonprofit Cheyenne River Youth Challenge (CRYP) in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. Since 1988, she has taken CRYP from a small youth middle to a campus that features youth and teenage facilities, artwork institute, backyard, and social enterprises.
A graduate of South Dakota’s Huron College, Garreau was the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe’s training providers specialist for 15 years, and through that point she served for 5 years on the CRST Police Fee—three of these years as chairperson. She is not any stranger to recognition for the unimaginable work CRYP accomplished. In 2017, she and her employees acquired Individuals for the Arts’ Robert E. Gard Award for the revolutionary, groundbreaking Waniyetu Wowapi (Winter Depend) Lakota Arts Institute, Waniyetu Wowapi Artwork Park, and RedCan Graffiti Jam. In 2018 CRYP was the honoree for the David Rockefeller pARTnership Award for his or her teen internships in social enterprise, native meals sovereignty, indigenous cooking, wellness, and the humanities. And in 2019, Julie acquired the Arts Training Award for her substantial contribution to the development of arts training.
Along with finishing a number of high-profile fellowships over time, Julie has been acknowledged with such prestigious awards because the Bush Prize for Innovation, Spirit of Dakota Award, Presidential Factors of Mild Award, and Tim Wapato Public Advocate of the Yr Award. She is presently a 2022 Very important Village Fellow.
